What Is Carbon Smart Wood?

Carbon Smart Wood is just wood, salvaged from trees that we divert from the landfill. This wood is used to create products with 26% less CO2e than regular wood and 7 times less than wood-plastic composites. Every board foot of Carbon Smart Wood has a net negative carbon impact – it’s wood that champions our planet.

Easy to install and easy on the Earth.

Carbon Smart Wood™ is named for its powerful climate impact – salvaging wood otherwise headed to landfill, burning, and mulch piles. Carbon Smart Wood™ is never harvested or cut down for the sole purpose of providing wood. Instead, it gives new life to wood that would have otherwise been wasted.

STABLE, DECAY-RESISTANT, AND CHEMICAL-FREE DECKING

Introducing our range of thermally modified Carbon Smart Wood™ decking, siding and fencing options, thoughtfully crafted from locally sourced fallen trees. Through a chemical-free 3-phase kiln process, these four different species undergo a compositional change on a cellular level, making them suitable for exterior applications. Performance-driven and visually appealing, this is your sustainable choice for enhancing outdoor spaces.

Chemical Free.
A natural, chemical-free process using only heat and steam to remove moisture from wood cells. This makes it lightweight

Decay Resistant.
The risk of fungal attack is greatly reduced because thermally modified wood no longer contains sufficient nutrients.

Enhanced Appearance.
Darker through-color tones. that will vary with cook temperatures and species. When left untreated, will patina gray.

Increased Stability.
Thermally modified wood is less susceptible to cupping and warping with changes in relative humidity and easier to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carbon Smart Wood?

Carbon Smart Wood is a sustainable wood product manufactured from lumber that would otherwise go to waste. It is a net-negative material, known for its durability and unique beauty. Carbon Smart Wood offers the benefit of minimal maintenance and low lifecycle costs, making it an eco-friendly alternative that meets the needs of environmentally conscious construction and design projects.

Carbon Smart Wood™ can be used both indoors and outdoors for decking, millwork, cladding, flooring, siding, fencing, furniture, and design objects. It can also be used for mass timber construction.
All wood, regardless of source, is a natural material and will move and adapt based on its environment. All Carbon Smart Wood™ is dried to all standard specifications to minimize that movement.
Each species of Carbon Smart Wood™ has its own physical & mechanical properties. Each species page lists its best uses based on those properties.

Each species of Carbon Smart Wood™ has its own maintenance recommendations based on its end use. In many cases, the frequency of maintenance is up to customer preferences.

  • Indoor woods that do not receive any foot traffic (like accent walls or space dividers) will rarely need any maintenance.
  • Indoor woods that experience traffic or wear and tear (like flooring or multi-use surfaces) may require refinishing over time.
  • Outdoor Carbon Smart Wood™ will patina over time (the rate of weathering depends on exposure and use).
  • Thermally Modified Carbon Smart Wood™ can be left to patina or refinished to return to the original color.
Unfortunately, FSC® does not yet have a classification for any salvaged lumber. Carbon Smart Wood’s team is working with them and other certifying bodies to create the right framework for salvaged material.
The largest difference between Carbon Smart Wood™ and traditionally sourced material comes from the presence of character in Carbon Smart Wood™. Some boards may require extra care through the machining process.
All Carbon Smart Wood™ is tracked via Traece™, Carbon Smart Wood’s inventory management and supply chain operating system. Traece™ is a robust system that tracks Carbon Smart Wood from tree felling to sale. It captures tree details, log specifics, product type, and customer information, ensuring transparency. The system follows wood movement through warehouses, carriers, and trucks, enhancing traceability. Traece™ also empowers sawyers to share the wood’s sustainable journey, adding value and accountability to the process.

Because Carbon Smart Wood is 100% wood, it can be reclaimed and reused if proper care is taken in deconstruction.
Through the thermal modification process, the material is baked at a high temperature, resulting in a color change. The amount of change depends on the species and how long it is dried.
Carbon Smart Wood™ can be both ripped and crosscut.
Carbon Smart Wood’s decking products come in Standard Eased Edge and Hidden Fastener profiles. Carbon Smart Wood also offers Tongue and Groove for covered decks. Carbon Smart Wood recommends the Ipe Deck Wise Clips for Carbon Smart Wood’s Hidden Fastener profile. They come in ¼”, 5/32”, and 3/32” gap spacing.

Carbon Smart Wood recommends using the Decking Elite screw in the GRK Fasteners line up for all installation projects.

For indoor products, a wet rag with a gentle cleaner is all you need. For outdoor products, if build-up occurs, you can wash it off with water.
Carbon Smart Wood suggests a 12-16″ minimum ground clearance.
Carbon Smart Wood™ exists because of the waste in traditional supply chains. Some call it variation, but Carbon Smart Wood calls it character. It may look different, but it performs just as well. The industry has been used to uniformity in material—Carbon Smart Wood™ is different.
